Lekeitio

I live in Bilbao during the week because I study here. But where I really lived during the very first days of my life is another place: Lekeitio. It´s a town located in the province of Biscay,in the Spanish Autonomous Comumnity of the Basque Country.
This lovely town has 7,293 inhabitants in winter, but in the summer season the situation changes considerably because tourism has a very important role. Then, the village becomes a resort with a beach called "Isuntza" and another one nearby, "Carraspio".

It´s one of the most important fishing ports on the Basque coast. Some years ago, almost all the inhabitants from Lekeitio had jobs related to the sea, even the women. There aren´t many immigrants but some have arrived over the last years.

Another important monument is the church of Santa Maria, from the 15th century.

It gives to the village a traditional look. Meanwhile, the beaches and the little island conected to one of them, "Garraitz", make you feel relaxed when you´re walking through the streets,on the way to a quiet afternoon on the beach.

I really love this place and I think that it could be a very interesting place for all type of visitors. As I said before, the best season to visit Lekeitio is in summer because that´s when we celebrate the local festivals, which they are popular all over the Basque Country. They´re celebrated on the first week of September. They main day is called "Antzarrak".I advice everybody to visit Lekeitio because you´re not going to regret about it.You´re all welcome!

  2. I haven´t gone to Lekeitio yet, but I´m sure that this year I will. I have some friends who spend the summer there, and they have told me that the best thing of that village are its festivals.
